In The News: ‘This is the floor, not the ceiling’: More than 80,000 people were homeless in Ontario in 2024, report finds | Toronto Star | Jan. 9 2025

January 9, 2025 – There are roughly 1,400 homeless encampments across large and small communities in the province, said Karen Redman, chair of the Mayors and Regional Chairs of Ontario (MARCO) and Chair of Waterloo Region, at an AMO press conference.

About 81,500 people experienced homelessness in Ontario in 2024, a new report has found, a 25 per cent increase compared to 2022.

In the scenario of an economic downturn, the number of people experiencing homelessness could rise to more than 294,000 by 2035 without significant government intervention, it added.

The first-of-its-kind analysis was released by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario in partnership with service agencies.

At a news conference on Thursday, AMO president and Westport Mayor Robin Jones said “municipalities are on the front lines of this crisis.”
